Earlier this week, we posted our first in what has now reached our fifth blog in the series on scandalous targeting of conservative political groups by the IRS. What started as “low-level employees in Cincinnati” has widened and the House Ways and Means Committee held its first hearing today. Our blogs on today’s hearing and the recently-released Inspector General report will be posted soon so please check back!
Top IRS Official Didn’t Reveal Tea Party Targeting to Congress
In coverage yesterday, the Associated Press revealed Acting IRS Commissioner Steven T. Miller failed to inform Congress of the targeted inquiries of Tea Party organizations, either in his written correspondence or during his July 25, 2012 testimony before House Ways and Means, despite being specifically questioned about it. The IRS website shows Mr. Miller is not only the Acting IRS Commissioner, but is also the Deputy Commissioner for Services and Enforcement, the division under scrutiny, which also happens to include the whistleblower division. He was appointed Acting Commissioner when Mr. Shulman’s 5-year term ended. He suddenly resigned this week.
Mid-Level Manager Who Apologized For Targeting, Previously Testified Before Congress
Lois Lerner, the head of the IRS division that oversees tax-exempt organizations that apologized for the targeting of conservative organizations last Friday, may have been less than truthful in her May 2012 response to Darrell Issa (R-CA), Chairman of the House Oversight Committee, inquiring into the complaints made by Tea Party groups. The Associated Press reported on May 13, 2013, that Ms. Lerner became aware of the targeting in June 2011, met twice with staff from the House Ways and Means committee and provided a 45-page written response to Rep. Issa. They go on to report that on none of these occasions did Ms. Lerner mention the targeting.
President Finally Acknowledged Scandal
On Monday, May 13, 2013, the President acknowledged the IRS targeting scandal but stated he only learned of it through news organizations the prior Friday, despite the White House counsel’s notification the week of April 22nd, that the inspector general’s report was nearly complete. Feigning outrage, he stated: “If, in fact, IRS personnel engaged in the kind of practices that had been reported on and were intentionally targeting conservative groups, then that’s outrageous and there’s no place for it…And they have to be held fully accountable”. Where have we heard similar decries? That’s correct, Benghazi. And we are still awaiting government officials and employees to be forthcoming, over 9 months after four brave Americans were murdered.
Clearly unconcerned, the President took to the links only one day after “learning” of the targeting, and hopped on to Air Force One to attend multiple fundraising events immediately after his Monday press conference.
Now we have learned the White House may have known about the targeting months before the election! Watch for more on this scandal soon! Demand the truth. Demand accountability. We are a Red Nation Rising.
