A Black Conservative on Victimology – Pt II

This is the second of a multi-part series from a black conservative on the victimology amongst black communities.  Look for the conclusion in this series tomorrow.

A RELUCTANT HORSE

A famous proverb listed in, Tudor writer, John Heywood’s compilation “Prouerbes in the Englishe Tongue” is as follows: ‘A man maie well bring a horse to the water, But he can not make him drinke without he will.’   In English: You can bring a horse to water, but you can’t make it drink.

As expressed and argued in the first part of this series, the black community in America is traditionally conservative, not liberal.  Incredulity at that statement is understandable. After all, how conservative can blacks really be when the overwhelming majority of African Americans vote Democrat, especially now, with the advent of the manufactured political phenomenon that is Barack Obama?  “Too conservative to be in bed with the Democrat Party” would be the answer to that.  So, why then are the vast majority of African Americans in bed with the party of the Left?

One reason, pointed to in my first piece, was a job well done by the Left in indoctrination and racial demagoguery. The other reason, in my opinion, is a deeply-rooted hypocrisy motivated by a wicked sense of self-interest within the black community.  Having explored the former to a satisfactory extent, the latter reason is the main subject of this and the final sequel in the series. To wit, why does this unfortunate dichotomy between values and politics within the black demography exist?

UNBELIEVABLE NUMBERS

But before we embark on our second answer let me treat you to some hard statistics to prove the typical black voter’s innate attraction towards conservatism.  From the horse’s mouth, blackdemographics.com was able to garner that in 2012, notwithstanding that only 16% of African Americans considered themselves Republicans, 44% considered themselves to bepolitical moderates while a mere 28% consider themselves Liberal in their political views. Not enough, I yield.

But there’s more to add to the picture. According to the coalition of conservative and moderate blacks at bookerrising.net, a Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies (hereafter, JCPES) poll in 2008 showed that ‘43.6% of black Americans self-identify as liberal, 24.4% as moderate, and 31.3% as conservative.’ With 43% claiming to be liberal, I understand that this could actually be interpreted as evidence against my point.  But look deeper and something more emerges. Consider how the picture America gets in the aftermath of a general election when blacks overwhelmingly turnout to support Democrat candidates. Then repeat to yourself: “31% of African Americans identify as conservative”! These are unbelievable numbers when you consider the deficit between them and the numbers that actually turn out to vote for conservative, Republican, or even libertarian-type politicians. The Left, on the other hand, has an undeniable surplus when you consider that only 43% of blacks actually think themselves liberals. But things get even more incredible.

Still focusing on JCPES polling, during the 2010 mid-term elections, African Americans across several states in the US were polled about their political ideology as separate from their party affiliation.  Interestingly, the same group of people who overwhelmingly showed favourability towards Barack Obama and the Democrats, as opposed to Republicans, delivered some very different results when it came to ideology.  For example, 35% of blacks polled in Arkansas said they were of a Christian conservative perspective, while another 35% claimed to be moderate.  In Missouri, things were exactly the same.  And in Indiana, conservatism among blacks was slightly lower, but it was still nowhere as low as you might imagine: 27%!

Now consider some hot-button issues and where African Americans claim they stand on them. The Pew Research Centre has on its website a report on “Trends in American Values: 1987-2012”.  In this report, it is stated that in its most recent polling, ‘Blacks view newcomers to the United States as more of a threat to American values (61%) than do whites (48%)’.  Of course, we all understand that immigration (when legal) can be good for a country.  But apparently, according to Pew research, more blacks are wary of floods of immigrants than their white counterparts. Surely, if one was to believe everything said in the media about xenophobic white ‘Tea-baggers’, it should be the other way round, right? Not so, it seems.

Furthermore, a 2008 Gallup report showed that only 31% of black Democrats in America say homosexual relations are morally acceptable, roughly the same as the 30% of Republicans who agree.  Only 37% of blacks were for abortion in somewhat-surprising contrast to the high 47% who were for the death penalty.  And finally, a meagre 30% were in favour of that diabolical oxymoron, homosexual marriage.  When considered that in a U.S. Religious Landscape Survey, conducted in 2007 by the Pew Research Center’s Forum on Religion & Public Life, Black Americans were found to be “markedly more religious on a variety of measures than the U.S. population as a whole”, with 87% being affiliated with a religion and 79 % of Blacks claiming that religion was “very important in their life”, the Gallup’s 2008 polling results should be of no surprise.

Myself, a black man, it is of no surprise to me! I can remember listening to conservative radio talk show host, Steve Deace, on one of his podcasts some weeks back with knowing glee as he pointed out how remarkable it was that the swing bloc in the recent Illinois House of Representatives’ debate over a marriage ‘equality’ bill was the black caucus.  Even more remarkably, that caucus rallied to vote almost unanimously against the bill.  And the same House or Representatives also saw help from black members in passing a pro conceal-carry law.  Shocking, right?  You could have sworn blacks were dyed-in-wool libs, right?  Think again.

Friends, these are not the signs of Americans plagued with a Leftist mind-set.  And they certainly aren’t signs of Americans politically-devoted to liberalism and so-called ‘progressivism’. But listening to the mainstream media’s talking heads all day long, it becomes very easy to be caught up in a false racial matrix.
