In a historic first, Oklahoma State Senator Nathan Dahm responded to a Tweet from a constituent with a courteous acknowledgment and then took immediate steps to introduce the very legislation suggested by the constituent. Welcome to the world of social media like Facebook and Twitter where the grassroots has growing influence!
On January 17, 2014 a Red Nation Rising @RNRLocal account, Oklahoma, sent OK State Senator Dahm a Tweet requesting the representative take a look at what the state of Arizona recently did in passing a law requiring high school students to pass the U.S. citizenship test in order to graduate. Jared Day has a piece on that over on Examiner.
Well, a few short days later on January 21 Dahm replied… via Twitter!
True To His Word
The OK State Senator didn’t stop with a Tweet! He took action and filed the bill in the Senate requiring creating the American Civics Act which requires a certain score on a certain civic test in order for high school kids to graduate! Way to go Senator and nice job to the Red Nation Rising Twitter account for YOUR civic action! Here is information on Dahm’s bill http://www.oklegislature.gov/BillInfo.aspx?Bill=SB407.
It really is historic… influencing our representatives across social media. That’s how we do it! Keep it up!
